Challenging and Inspiring: Beyond Common Fall Prevention Practices

Fall Prevention

Incorporating Best Practices to Reduce Preventable Harm

American Nurse Journal is excited to announce a two-part webinar series focused on enhancing nurses’ knowledge related to patient fall prevention and application of new best practices, featuring prominent patient safety experts Lillee Smith Gelinas, DNP, RN, CPPS, FNAP, FAAN, and Patricia A. Quigley, PhD, APRN, CRRN, FAAN, FAANP, FARN.

Part 1 – June 20th at 1:00 PM (Eastern Time): Making the Case for Individualized Care

Nurses in all aspects of care dedicate themselves to reducing falls and falls with injury. Since the science of care is always evolving based on new evidence, nurses in direct patient care, administration, safety and quality leaders all benefit from the webinar content. The faculty aim to inspire nurses to understand and implement innovative fall assessment programs. Beginning with patients known to fall who present to the emergency department (ED), with key discussion points include the interventions for fall prevention and management.

Emergency departments often serve as the primary point of entry into acute care for older patients who experience falls, but the issue of “known fallers” may not be identified or managed appropriately. Webinar content will support all nurses – no matter what specialty or location. It will help nurses to create individualized care plans and incorporate best practices into the care process based on fall etiology and assessed contributing factors.

Every 11 seconds an older person presents to the ED due to a fall (National Council on Aging, 2021), with approximately 32% hospitalized. But the care plans for “known fallers” are often the same as other patients who are just a fall risk. The best care is based on individualized care plans which considers previous fall etiology and the assessment of contributing factors. Learn More…
