In response to: Nursing informatics career opportunities
Dear Editor,
As a Master of Science in Nursing Informatics student, I appreciate the guidance this article has provided regarding career opportunities from this educational track. I chose to pursue formal advanced education as a means for career advancement due to feelings of burnout and periodically wondering if I should remain in the nursing profession, a sentiment that unfortunately appears to be shared by many of my nursing colleagues. Like many nurses who have pursued a career in nursing informatics, I learned about this specialty through chance when I was asked to take on the challenge of being a super user for an EHR go-live at one of the facilities where I was working. This was a challenging but highly rewarding role and inspired me to learn more about health informatics, however I have found myself rather stuck on how to advance in this type of role after a few super user experiences.
This article by Tiffany Kelley (2023) provides invaluable information regarding career prospects for informatics nurses, especially with the introduction of roles beyond clinical settings such as those with IT vendors, government agencies, insurance companies, and consulting agencies. As the author stated, it is important to note that not all of these roles would be appropriate for a novice informatics nurse. While the presented career prospects in this article are extremely helpful, I feel it would be important to present prospective informatics nurses with the necessary educational steps to these various career paths. Overall, I find encouragement in the career advancement opportunities my MSN degree will grant me in the future.
