MedWish-Medworks: A United Front for Equitable Healthcare

What if unwanted medical supplies could become lifelines for those in need? Imagine diverting over half a million pounds of usable medical equipment and supplies from landfills into the hands of those who need them most. MedWish-Medworks, a combined non-profit organization based in Cleveland, Ohio is making this a reality.

Repurposing Resources, Reaching the World

As of September 2024, MedWish diverted 512,763 pounds of medical supplies from landfills, distributing 447,962 pounds and impacting an estimated 969,712 lives. The organization accepts usable equipment and supplies from over 250 partners nationwide, including corporations and individuals.

MedWish partners with trusted organizations worldwide, delivering supplies directly to clinics, hospitals, and frontline healthcare workers in need. Volunteers are the backbone of this operation: sorting, counting, packing, and labeling donations. ANA-Ohio members themselves contribute valuable time, ensuring supplies are organized and appropriate for their destination.

Expanding Reach with Medworks Merger

To further address healthcare disparities, MedWish recently merged with Medworks, a northeast Ohio non-profit that conducts free medical, dental, and vision clinics throughout the year, serving those in need. Since its inception, Medworks has conducted more than 60 clinics and provided care to more than 24,000 individuals. Partnerships with local healthcare organizations ensure clinic availability, access to resources, and follow-up care. Staffed by volunteers — nurses, doctors, other caregivers, and laypersons — these clinics are a testament to the power of community service.

At a recent clinic held specifically for women’s health, Dr. Zac Ponsky, founder of Medworks, provided last-minute guidance and direction prior to the clinic opening. His opening remarks summed it up perfectly,  “This is why we entered the healthcare professions — to help those who truly need it.” MedWish-Medworks embodies this ideal, ensuring equipment, supplies, and skilled professionals reach those who need them most.
