In response to: New nurse orientation
Dear Editor,
Maureen Mulligan’s article, “New nurse orientation: A simple checklist helps guide the transition from classroom to clinical unit,” offers a compelling exploration of structured approaches to preparing new graduate nurses for clinical practice. I found the Phases of Orientation Checklist particularly inspiring for fostering consistency and effectiveness in onboarding processes.
My Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aligns with the principles discussed, focusing on microlearning techniques to improve bedside nurses’ knowledge of wound care and addressing knowledge gaps in wound care. This aligns with Mulligan’s emphasis on practical, goal-oriented education and the integration of Bloom’s taxonomy and Benner’s novice-to-expert framework.
By leveraging evidence-based practices, such as microlearning through visual aids, this intervention aims to enhance nurse competency and patient outcomes, aligning with findings that structured orientation processes support skill acquisition and confidence. Thank you for spotlighting innovative strategies in nurse education. I encourage continued adoption of adaptable, evidence-based approaches, like those highlighted in Mulligan’s work, as a foundation for advancing nursing practice and education.
